New light is cast on Bristol's famous southern suburb by eminent historian Anton Bantock. The story begins when the site of Bristol was still a swamp, and the medieval era is explored at what remains of the area's great manor houses. The building of the New Cut in the early 1800s brought industry to the area and helped to trigger a massive population growth but, as Bedminster expanded, hardship inevitably followed. Three wonderful local characters recount their priceless tales of the 20th Century in the area, including Alfie Giles, who was born at the end of the First World War. His memories of the area resonate with the humour and spirit of this very special part of Bristol.
